Private Eye Surgery at Spire Clare Park Hospital, Farnham
Mr Neil Modi, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, offers private cataract, lens replacement, glaucoma, eyelid (oculoplastic) and dry eye care at Spire Clare Park Hospital, Farnham, for patients from Surrey and Hampshire. He holds clinics here on Thursday mornings and operates at Clare Park, with consultation, laser treatment and surgery all available on site.
Mr Modi was the first surgeon in Surrey and Hampshire to implant the Rayner Galaxy lens, in December 2024. He was also the first in Surrey to use the iStent Infinite, Hydrus and Preserflo glaucoma devices. With extensive subspecialist training, Mr Modi also performed eyelid surgery and in particular has refined a technique for scarless ptosis surgery.
Clare Park is an independent hospital set in countryside between Farnham and Fleet, with its own operating theatres, day-case unit and diagnostic facilities.
One surgeon for the whole eye
Most eye surgeons concentrate on one area. Through years of dedicated training and practice, Mr Modi's practice covers three: cataract and lens surgery, glaucoma, and oculoplastic surgery of the eyelids. Patients with more than one problem, such as a complex cataract and a drooping eyelid, or glaucoma and dry eye, can have both assessed and treated by the same consultant rather than being referred on.
He is a full member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the UK and Eire Glaucoma Society and the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society. At Frimley Park Hospital he has led the NHS glaucoma and laser services as well as held the post of lead clinician for Ophthalmology.
Treatments at Clare Park
Cataract and lens replacement
With more than 5,000 cataract operations behind him, Mr Modi plans each operation around what you want to see afterwards: distance, reading, screens, or a combination. Your eye is measured precisely (biometry) and the lens options explained in plain terms, from standard monofocal lenses to the Rayner EMV, multifocal and toric designs. Premium options include the Rayner Galaxy lens.
- Private cataract surgery, including both eyes on the same day where suitable
- Refractive lens exchange, for people tired of reading glasses and varifocals
- YAG laser capsulotomy, a few minutes in clinic, for hazy vision months or years after cataract surgery
Glaucoma and raised eye pressure
Whether you have been told you are a glaucoma suspect, have ocular hypertension or have established glaucoma, the aim is the same: protect the sight you have with the least treatment burden. Assessment covers pressure, the drainage angle, Humphrey visual field testing and Heidelberg high-resolution OCT scans of the optic nerve.
- SLT laser, which can reduce or replace daily drops
- Laser iridotomy for narrow-angle glaucoma
- Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), including the iStent Infinite, often combined with cataract surgery
- Trabeculectomy where pressure needs lowering further
Eyelid surgery
Eyelid problems affect comfort, appearance and sometimes vision. Mr Modi performs functional and cosmetic eyelid surgery under local anaesthetic.
- Ptosis correction for a drooping upper lid, including a scarless approach through the inside of the lid
- Upper lid blepharoplasty to remove heavy, hooded skin
- Repair of an in-turning (entropion) or out-turning (ectropion) lid
- Removal of cysts and eyelid lesions
- Treatment for watering eyes
Dry eye and blepharitis
Gritty, tired or watering eyes often come from the eyelid margins rather than the eye itself. Mr Modi carries out a full dry eye assessment at Clare Park to identify the cause, then recommends treatment.
- ZEST in-clinic eyelid cleaning for blepharitis
- Punctal plugs to keep natural tears on the eye for longer
- OptiLight IPL, a course of light treatments for meibomian gland dysfunction, is available at Mr Modi's Nuvision Clinic in Camberley

Frequently asked questions
The hospital has a Farnham, Surrey address but sits just over the Hampshire border, which makes it convenient for patients from both counties.
Often, yes. Because Mr Modi performs both types of surgery, he can plan them together and advise on the best order.
Not if you are paying for yourself, although a letter from your optometrist or GP is useful. Insurers normally ask for a GP referral before authorising treatment.
When a drooping lid or excess skin is affecting your vision, insurers usually cover it. Purely cosmetic surgery is self-funded. Mr Modi will tell you which applies after examining you.
No. Refractive lens exchange is treated as elective vision correction and is self-funded. Cataract surgery is normally covered.
